PROJECT MENINAS 15 (GIRLS 15)

In 2017, when Turma do Bem turned 15 years old, a group of “debutantes” was chosen to launch a new program of female empowerment. It emerged because we observed that the reality of the beneficiary girls was much more complex than that of the boys. Many girls grow up learning that men are superior. They earn less than men, even in identical positions. They are responsible for domestic work and raising children. And they still suffer the violent consequences of sexism: they are harassed, assaulted, more vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and many become pregnant at an early age.

Meninas 15 is based on the friendship relationship between girls from different backgrounds. On one side, there are young university students. On the other, there are our beneficiaries who are assisted by Dentistas do Bem. From the encounter between the two groups, a network of friendship, knowledge exchange, dignity rescue, and growth emerges. Through collective help, each girl gains individual strength and begins to help other girls, breaking a cycle of inequality that concerns the whole society.

In addition to the affectionate bond and emotional and intellectual support, through WhatsApp conversations or monthly meetings, the Program provides beneficiaries with a series of tools that make them aware of their trajectory and personal and professional goals. Women who have already achieved knowledge and victories start to help others who have not yet obtained the same achievement – and who will be the “godmothers” of other girls in the future, multiplying and perpetuating the project’s goals.

ESTUDANTES DO BEM (STUDENTS FOR GOOD)

Dentistry student, have you ever stopped to think about the kind of education you are receiving in college? Turma do Bem has noticed that courses rarely address social issues. The consequence of this is that, despite the existence of excellent professionals, few have the ability to see the people who need a dentist the most.
To shed light on the gap in the curriculum in most institutions, TdB created the Estudante do Bem (Student for Good) contest in 2012. The aim of it is to make new dentists aware of the social violence suffered by those who do not have access to adequate treatment. The project has already had the participation of more than 4,000 dental students from all over Brazil.

How it works

This year, the main theme of the contest is the mobilization and sensitization of dentistry students towards victims of social violence, from the perspective of oral health. The people, who are invisible to society, bring marks that go far beyond functional deficiencies; there are marks that affect their ability to smile, live, and exist.
The Estudante do Bem contest, organized every year by Turma do Bem, involves the participation of dentistry students from all over Brazil!
The winning student, in addition to receiving the prize and being recognized by the world’s largest specialized volunteer network, will have their work used by the organization to impact even more people through the Dentista do Bem program.
